The saying, ‘It’s not what you know, it’s who you know’ does not necessarily ring true. The term ‘networking’, can have negative connotations and people may assume that it is an idea built on using people for personal gain but this is simply not the case. Executed correctly, networking should be mutually beneficial. If you google ‘definition of networking’, the Business Dictionary definition is,
“Creating a group of acquaintances and associates and keeping it active through regular communication for mutual benefit. Networking is based on the question “How can I help?” and not with “What can I get?”
Traditionally, methods of networking would be based around attending industry groups and events, however, although this still exists and is arguably the most efficient way of meeting people and making long lasting impressions; thanks to technology, you can now network from the comfort of your own office or home.
The most commonly used online professional platform, LinkedIn, holds a plethora of tools to help you to meet and engage with people in your industry. You can join groups, focus your posts with the use of a ‘hashtag’ and connect and introduce yourself to the right people using a simple search function. If you are looking for a new role, this is a great place to get a heads up on what is available.
Whether through online or face to face networking, it’s the sharing of knowledge that we feel is most important and most valuable. Connecting with people, sharing and offering help to others is the best way to make long-lasting relationships and it is those who remember the help they had from you who are most likely to be there when you need them.
If and when you find yourself looking for new opportunities, utilise the connections you’ve made and put yourself out in the marketplace. This is when having an online presence can make a big difference. Share posts that include key words or phrases such as, ‘actively looking’ or ‘back on the market.’ Hiring managers and recruiters will then see these posts and get in touch with vacancies. Consider the people that you know who have their own large network of contacts within your industry, speaking with just a few of these people could open a lot of doors through word-of-mouth.
