Exam season is upon us and as many students reach the end of their life in education they will be asking, what next?

At this stage in your life, it can feel like your choices are overwhelming and I’m sure everybody from your careers advisor to your Grandma has an opinion on the kind of company you should look to work for.

So, what about FMCG?

FMCG stands for Fast Moving Consumer Goods and covers a wide range of companies but predominantly it means that companies within this sector are selling goods which are ‘fast-moving’ so they go from factory to shelf very quickly and are also quick to leave the shelves again; these are the essential items we use day in and day out like food, drink and toiletries.

Why should you be considering a career in FMCG?

  • This is a stable and thriving market. There are billions of us on this planet and we will always need to eat, drink and wash so this is not an industry that is going anywhere. For this reason, there are excellent employment prospects. Even during the recession, the FMCG industry still carried on profiting well.

  • Secondly, the companies that are producing these goods are dynamic and diverse. They have varying roles and opportunities available in different departments ranging from Engineering to HR to Finance. For a graduate, this creates endless possibility. Right now, you may not be one hundred percent sure where you want your career to take you but with numerous opportunities, possibilities and positions available to work your way up through and the option to transfer across departments, starting your career within a company in this sector can open doors that may not otherwise be available to you.

  • Finally, FMCG is an industry with constant progress. This is a fast-paced and innovative work environment and these companies are constantly looking for fresh ideas to take to the marketplace and entice consumers. This makes it perfect for young and enthusiastic graduates, eager to learn but also to share their knowledge and expertise.

This multi-million pound industry holds some of the most famous brand names that we come across every day and many of these offer excellent graduate schemes that you may have already heard of. However, if a graduate scheme is not for you or you are interested in FMCG but like the idea of working for a smaller company, there are still plenty of options available to you.
